Varitronix
has introduced a new frontlight option to its Bi-stable Cholesteric
Display (BCD) range making the displays suitable for use in
low light environments.
Varitronix BCDs are non-volatile and will retain their image
contents for periods of up to 10 years with no power source,
only requiring power when information on the screen is changed.
This makes them ideal for signage, labelling and status indicators
where information is presented for long periods without updating.
The new frontlight system uses white LEDs and a special light
guide to provide the maximum efficient illumination with minimal
power consumption. A strength of Varitronix BCD technology
is its excellent visibility. Far from degrading under bright
light, display contrast actually increases in direct sunlight.
Due to the absence of polarizers in this technology, viewing
angles of up to nearly 180 degrees are achievable.
The new frontlight option means that the displays can now
be used at night too opening up a wider range of possible
applications.
Varitronix is offering standard BCD displays in resolutions
from 32 x 32 to 240 x 160 and 478 x 638 pixels though displays
are customisable depending on project requirements. Varitronix's
BCDs are available in a range of attractive monochrome colour
combinations, including Blue/White, Red/Amber, Yellow/Green,
Pink/Peach and Orange/Yellow.
