FOR-A Corporation of America, a leading
manufacturer of video and audio systems for the broadcast
and professional video industries, announces the installation
of its HVS-500HS switcher and MV-1610HS 16-channel multi-viewer
at Medaille College in Buffalo, NY.

Medaille College purchased the HVS-500HS and MV-1610HS through
Williamsville, New York-based HD Group as part of an extensive
renovation and upgrade for the Communication Department in
which the school converted to an all-digital system and established
an HD studio. The new facility was renamed the Palisano TV
Studio in recognition of a sizeable grant donated by the Palisano
Foundation, which provided the bulk of funding for the equipment
upgrade.
Prior to the upgrade, students in the Communications Department
had been working in an analog environment. According to Lisa
Van Valkinburgh, Clinical Associate Professor and Chairperson
for Medaille's Communication Program, a technology upgrade
was sorely needed to replace outdated equipment.
"Our students were able to learn the basics of production.
However, it became clear that they were not being exposed
to the technology commonly in use today," said Van Valkinburgh.
"Now that we have installed high quality, professional
broadcast equipment, such as the FOR-A switcher and multi-viewer,
we're even more confident our students will succeed in their
chosen profession."
The HVS-500HS is a self-contained switcher that accepts analog
and digital HD and SD formats with no external conversion
required. One of the switcher's innovations is its variety
of input/output interfaces, including SD-SDI, HD-SDI, Analog
Component SD and Analog Component HD.
The MV-1610HS multi-viewer supports mixed input of HD-SDI,
SD-SDI and analog composite signals. High-resolution video
output using a DVI terminal is included as standard. Support
is also provided for user-created patterns and video transfer
over a LAN connection. The viewer can be set to divide the
screen in many ways, enabling the combination of small and
large images.
The upgrade will benefit the entire student body at Medaille
College. Other academic departments, including the Athletics
Department, will enhance their curriculum thanks to the enhanced
services the production facilities now provide. For example,
sports management students can simulate mock press conferences
or learn play-by-play during athletic competitions on campus.
Veterinary students can have surgeries videotaped for further
examination and critique by instructors.
Given the scope of the renovation, a variety of components
were installed at Medaille College's TV studio. The HVS-500HS
digital video switcher installed in the newly renovated control
room provides HD-SDI signals for the MV-1610HS 16-input multi-viewer.
Three Canon XLH1S cameras, along with Mirror-Image LC-150MP
Teleprompters, were also selected. A new lighting grid outfitted
with Videssence dimmable fluorescent lighting fixtures and
control console were also installed. Monitors included an
LG 37" LCD for all sources, as well as two LG 22"
LCD's for preview and program, mounted into a custom-designed
Winsted M-wall. And a new ergonomically designed console and
rack system provides an efficient workspace for the students.
