Liberty Wire & Cable Emerges as a Leader in Environmentally Friendly Product Manufacture

Liberty Wire & Cable, worldwide supplier of a broad range of wire and cable products for the audio/video trade, has emerged as a leader in the manufacture of socially responsible, environmentally friendly products.

Liberty offers a broad spectrum of wire and cable products that comply with emerging Green Market standards. Compliance with one major initiative, in particular, stands out — the Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, calls for reductions in lead and five other chemicals.

While RoHS only became effective in 2006, Liberty has been voluntarily developing compliant products for the past several years. More than 90 percent of Liberty’s 6,000-plus products are already RoHS compliant. Liberty is, in addition, committed to constantly expanding the number of environmentally friendly products it manufactures, further enhancing The Liberty Advantage by providing extra value for installers and their clients.

“There has been an increase in demand for products in the A/V marketplace that are RoHS compliant in bid specifications,” said Kirk Horlbeck, Liberty Senior Vice President. “More than 90 percent of our products are already RoHS compliant, which helps our customers compete for and win A/V projects that call for RoHS compliant products.“

The RoHS directive was adopted by the European Union in 2003 and became effective last year. It restricts the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexevalent chromium, and two polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in electronic and electrical equipment. PBB and PBDE are flame retardants.

Many other countries are implementing or considering  the RoHS directive. In the U.S., California already recognizes portions of the directive, while other states and cities are debating whether to adopt similar laws. The RoHS directive is also part of a broader legislative initiative to solve the problems presented by huge amounts of toxic waste.
