Samsung Partners With 3M To Create State-Of-The-Art Digital Signage Solution

June 20, 2007

Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a world-leading manufacturer of professional LCD and PDP display products, today announced a new partnership with 3M to offer a state-of-the-art digital signage solution that can easily be used in a variety of different business climates.  The announcement was made at the InfoComm 07 show in Anaheim, CA, where a selection of Samsung's displays and projectors will be on display in the Samsung booth, #8400, at the Anaheim Convention Center, June 19-21.

Through the partnership, which combines Samsung’s SP-P310MEMX Pocket Imager with 3M’s Vikuiti Rear Projection Display Films, producing a creative and dynamic digital sign is now both easier and less expensive.  The Samsung Pocket Imager – which is small enough to take anywhere – can project images from a variety of sources, including computers, DVD players, video game stations and digital cameras.  Meanwhile, the Vikuiti film provides a non-glare and low-reflective surface that resists ambient light washout, enabling crisp and clear images to be projected under almost any lighting conditions. The film, which is ultra thin, flexible and self-adhesive, can be applied to windows or any smooth, transparent surface.

“We are thrilled to partner with 3M to develop this all-in-one digital signage solution,” said Christopher Franey, VP of commercial sales and marketing, Samsung Electronics America.  “Melding the ability of the Vikuiti films and screens to be shaped and displayed with the Pocket Imager’s versatility provides the end-user with an array of options to creatively convey their message to a targeted audience.”

"An increasing number of companies are turning to digital signage as cost effective way to maximize exposure, drive revenues and minimize expenses due to process inefficiencies," said Mark Schuleman, sales and marketing development manager, 3M Optical Systems Division.  "Through our partnership with Samsung, we have created a robust, affordable digital signage solution that will benefit large and small businesses alike, which are sometimes wary to invest in digital equipment.”

A travel agency, for example, can use the Samsung Pocket Imager to display streaming video of a vacation destination on a piece of Vikuiti film that is shaped like the sun. By placing the Pocket Imager in a concealed location, the agency can create a unique digital sign that appears in its storefront window.

When compared to printed materials and static signs, digital signage has many advantages. Changing messages in real time allows for immediate marketing implementation, while unlimited content capacity is invaluable when advertising space is at a premium. In addition, product and brand promotions can be tailored by demographic region at a much lower cost.

The Samsung Pocket Imager, which features a Carl Zeiss lens and digital light processing (DPL) technology, can project displays from a distance of 1.3 to 8.2 feet with a contrast ratio of 1000:1. Measuring in at 5-inches wide by 3.7-inches deep and 2-inches high, the 1.5-pound pocket imager is both light and portable. Plus, by utilizing LED with a lifespan of 20,000 hours, there is no projector lamp to replace.

The all-in-one product, which includes Samsung’s pocket imager, 3M’s five-piece kit of 9-inch by 12-inch film and an easy-to-use software package, will be available on July 1, 2007.
